The Paris Agreement lays out where we want to be, but not how we need to get there. According the German Federal Government\u2019s Climate Action Plan, emissions need to be measurably reduced by 2030 \u2013 by at least 55%. By 2050, emissions should be reduced by 80% to 95% \u2013 the 1990 emission values serving as the benchmark here.<\/p>\n
Germany achieved its climate targets in 2020, with emissions dropping by 40.8% (again, measured against the 1990 benchmark values) \u2013 albeit with some disappointment that a third of this achievement, particularly in the transport and energy segments, was attributable to the pandemic.<\/p>\n
Germany\u2019s carbon emissions account for around just 2.5% of the world\u2019s emissions, but if we combine all 27 EU member states, the EU\u2019s emissions are ranked third globally behind China and the U.S. This shows that the environment is a global topic \u2013 and also that all action taken in service of cutting emissions is a step towards achieving a greater and more important objective.<\/p>\n
